Nora dresses for comfort, not fashion. She favors the cardigan and skirt combo for her uniform, but is almost exclusively found in oversized sweaters and jeans otherwise. She favors canvas shoes and very rarely wears heels. While not fashionable, Nora does try to avoid looking sloppy, but the ends of her sleeves often show the signs of nervous picking. Her long thick black hair is incapable of holding a curl without a great deal of heat and product and she usually wears it down or pulled into a quick messy bun. She has no tattoos or piercings and her makeup is very bare, usually just a tinted moisturizer and chapstick. [x]
PB: Cynthy Wu
PERSONALITY
Likes: Rain, bunnies, moonlit nights, motivational stickers, baking, knit clothing, French horn, everything Disney (Mulan, Moana & Minnie are faves), Hello Kitty, Jane Austen novels & film adaptations, sweeping period romances, reading, bath bombs, HK milk tea, french toast, ping pong, lavender fragrance, soft serve.
Dislikes: Talking about herself, being alone, thunderstorms, calligraphy (it's pretty, but she's very bad at it), public speaking, horror films, needles, sad endings, tomatoes, hot weather, restless nights.
Nora is exactly the sort of girl that gets described as "mousey". She is ever present and social, but there's a clear shy and nervous energy about her that indicates she could skitter off at a moment's notice. Her behavior is often reminiscent of a kindergarten teacher facing down a swarm of piranhas. It's a combination that some find endearing, but plenty of others find exhausting.
Nora isn't comfortable unless she's uncomfortable. She runs off anxious energy, be it from pulling another all-nighter before a test or having to speak in front of her classmates, both of which are situations she dislikes, but at least in these situations she can find a channel to focus all her energy into. Even outside the classroom, it's clear that every time Nora speaks up, it's a small triumph and despite her discomfort, Nora tries very hard to be engaged socially. Quiet, calm, peace, those are when it's the hardest because then it's just Nora alone with her thoughts and insecurities, waiting for the world to inevitably turn upside down again.
There's very little pretenses with Nora. She is who she is. Honest, warm, caring, and trying her best. She's eager to take on the burdens of others and is always a willing shoulder to cry on. She seems to possess an unending well of patience, both willing to take on tedious tasks and unwilling to give up on people who try to push her away. In the end, the more time spent focusing on others, the less time is left to focus on herself. While she rarely talks about herself, it's clear that this secretiveness doesn't come from a place of duplicity.
Nora carries around a heavy weight with her and at her core she is a deeply unhappy person. The loss of her best friend and older sister is a pain she still feels acutely, made all the worse by a natural inclination towards depression. Left to her own devices for too long, Nora typically falls into melancholy. To combat this, she works very hard to always be busy and throws herself into everything she does. It's a bandage, but while most of the world sees a highly anxious girl, her deeper sadness manages to remain hidden away.
As a dreamer and a romantic, Nora views Finchwood with a great deal of wonder. It's a cause that is so much larger than herself, to help people and to protect them. It's also something that she can easily lose herself in, to a somewhat unhealthy escapist degree. She's completely terrified of the new responsibility she's been handed this year, convinced that someone's made a horrible mistake. Terrified is exactly where she needs to be in order to excel though, and she's ready to work hard and motivate her squad to be its best.
SKILLS
Languages: English, Cantonese (conversational with a decent grasp on reading and writing), and Mandarin (learning).
Piano & French Horn: Nora was introduced to the piano at a very young age and obediently went through the motions of daily practice, but didn't truly bond with an instrument until being introduced to the French horn. She plays well and had no difficulty passing the audition process for music class, but she does miss being part of a school orchestra and has always liked the idea of marching band.
Disney Music Aficionado: Nora knows all the lyrics to all the songs and has several books of sheet music. The Disney Sing-Along Songs series maaaaybe made up a large portion of their film collection growing up.
Knitting: There's something very warm and comforting about knitwear to Nora and knitting helped keep her hands busy during long hours in hospital rooms. She mostly makes easier projects that she can work on mindlessly.
Singing: Nora has a soft, pleasant voice in the soprano range, but won't be winning many solos. Which is just fine with her.
Baking: Nora loves baking. She is not remotely good at it, but this doesn't stop her. She has a future on Nailed It!
HISTORY
Family:
Alfred Lee. Father. Alfred runs a neighborhood grocery store that caters towards Asian cuisine. Since the Marvel films have reached their prominence, he's often joked about changing his name to Stan.
Vivienne Lee. Mother. Vivienne works as a waitress, a hairstylist, and Alfred's bookkeeper in order to help make ends meet. She's always had a more reserved temperament than her husband, but has become particularly withdrawn since the death of her daughter.
Francine Lee. Older sister, deceased. Frannie was the bright star at the center of Nora's universe and Nora is still struggling to come to terms with her death two years ago.
Extended Family. Nora has a great deal of extended family, most of whom all live within the city, but some still live in Hong Kong.
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY (Bensonhurst)
Nora's story isn't an uncommon one. She was raised in a strict, but loving household, where hard work, duty, and obedience were viewed as essential character values. Her parents worked long hours and dreamed of a different life for their daughters and pushed them hard towards excellence. It wasn't all studying and piano practice though – there was still plenty of time to watch Mulan for the five hundredth time or visit her father at work and name the eels. And most importantly, there was Frannie.
Despite the two year age difference, the sisters were inseparable and people often joked that they must be twins, something that always made Nora's heart swell up with pride. From the start, it was clear that Nora was shyer and preferred to stand in Frannie's shadow. To Nora, Frannie was everything that she wasn't – brave, strong, outgoing, athletic, beautiful, perfect. The Sun to her Moon. They spent hours playing together, talking, building worlds. Nora didn't need anyone else if there was Frannie.
But despite how much Nora built her up, Frannie wasn't invincible.
It started innocently enough. Frannie complained about her knee hurting. It was assumed she must have hurt herself playing soccer – Frannie had made the high school team and Nora had never doubted that she would. But it persisted and eventually got worse. A series of doctor visits eventually determined that a mass had formed near her knee and she was officially diagnosed with osteosarcoma. A fancy word for bone cancer.
Nora was devastated, terrified, and in denial. Frannie remained upbeat and reassuring. The treatments were especially aggressive and Nora watched helplessly as her hero was proven mortal and life for the Lee family became an exhausting slog between work, school, and hospital rooms. Time still moved at the same pace it always had and yet every minute by Frannie's hospital side seemed to drag on forever.
There was light finally at the end of the tunnel and Frannie was declared successfully in remission. The world was forever changed, but life slowly began to creep back towards some sense of normalcy. Despite the impracticality of it, Alfred determined the family desperately needed to get away and the girls finally got their long requested trip to Disney World. Even on a tight budget, it was everything Nora had dreamed of and more. Expensive food, long waits for rides, all of it could be excused because Nora was with Frannie and everything bad was in the past. Nora hated returning home to the real world, but she and Frannie made a promise they would come back to visit every year once they were adults with their own glamorous jobs and handsome Prince Charming husbands.
The real world had different plans and during a routine followup it was discovered that Frannie's cancer had moved into her lungs. More hospital rooms, more waiting, more dread followed. The doctors were honest about their expectations, but Nora remained in denial until the end. With the brightest star in her life extinguished, Nora collapsed in on herself, going through the motions of life in a daze. At school she was clearly distracted, bringing home near failing grades for the first time in her life and at night she would sneak into Frannie's bedroom and cry herself to sleep.
The adults in Nora's life intervened as best they could, but simply giving her time to process didn't seem to be enough and it was suggested that a change of scenery might help, to get her away from all the reminders that she seemed to wallow in. Her parents were hesitant and not overly eager to have an empty home, but the tuition was paid for, the campus was beautiful, and academics were excellent. When the idea was presented to Nora, they were surprised by how quickly she took to the idea and how she threw herself into studying for the entrance exam.
Nora was invited to campus and didn't balk for a moment at the wild tale being spun about Personas and saving the world. She signed her contract and sent herself hurtling into a fantasy world of fighting monsters and saving people with very little regard for her own personal well being. When summer came, she tried to return home, but quickly found herself falling into a deep melancholy and returned to school a few days later, begging to be allowed to stay on as part of the skeleton crew. If anyone asks, Nora is doing great. Thanks!!
COMBAT
Persona: Mumiah
Element: Water
ACADEMICS
Core Classes: English*, Mathematics*, Science*, Social Studies*, Training.
Elective Classes: Music, Life Skills, Philosophy, Leadership.
Clubs: Community Outreach, Student Council, Choir, Drama.
General Performance: Nora works extremely hard in school, a trait which was ingrained into her from an early age. She's very attentive and tries to participate in discussions, but is clearly nervous when doing so, and having to stand in front of the class to give a speech is particularly nerve wracking. Academically, she pulls in mostly As with the occasional B. Anything lower would be the cause of a great deal of shame. Nora enjoys Music, Life Skills, and Training the most, finding some amount of comfort in each subject daily work. She struggles a lot with both English and Philosophy class because they require putting her thoughts and opinions so clearly on display, but Philosophy is on her schedule to please her parents.
